Holy Week Services
Palm Sunday 10am - Sunday 29th March
Mass at church with the Blessing of the Palms.
Monday (March 30th) and Tuesday (March 31st) of Holy Week - 7pm Mass and Compline at church.
‘Compline’ also known as ‘Night Prayer’, follows a service of Holy Communion. This is a quiet service thanking God for the day as it draws to a close.
Wednesday 1st April at 7pm – Agape Meal in the Fellowship Hall
At the Last Supper, before his arrest in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus celebrated a traditional Passover meal with his disciples. We re-enact the Passover Meal, and sample the traditional ceremonial foods of Passover, and even sing some Hebrew! The meal concludes with a simple Eucharist, remembering that Jesus instituted the celebration of Holy Communion at this meal.
Maundy Thursday 2nd April at 7pm - Liturgy of the Last Supper and Foot washing
In this service, we recall Jesus wrapping himself in a towel, and in an act of humility washing his disciples feet. Congregation members may have their feet ceremoniously washed by the Priest if they wish, and we then celebrate Holy Communion. In preparation for Good Friday, and in remembrance of Christ being stripped of his garments and dignity, the Altars in the church are stripped reminding us of the barrenness of the cross. The ‘Gethsemane Watch’ begins immediately after the service ends.
Maundy Thursday 2nd April at 8.30pm - Gethsemane Watch
Just before his betrayal and arrest, Jesus prayed with his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane. The Gethsemane Watch recalls Jesus instructing his disciples to keep watch with him. A period of silent meditation and reflection, come for as much or as little as you like, or sign up for a 45-minute slot. The watch concludes at Midnight.
Good Friday 3rd April at 2pm - Solemn Liturgy of the Passion
We recall Christ's Crucifixion, and those who wish will have an opportunity to pray silently before the Cross at the front of church, before celebrating the Eucharist from the bread consecrated on Maundy Thursday. An opportunity to reflect on Christ's Passion - his giving of his self on the cross, as a sacrifice to free us all from sin. This service provides a window of quiet reflection on Good Friday afternoon. This is the only time in the Church Year that the 'Sanctuary Lamp' that symbolizes the light of the risen Christ is extinguished. The lamp will not be lit again till the First Mass of Easter on Holy Saturday has taken place.
Good Friday 3rd April at 6pm - Tenebrae
Tenebrae is a traditional service where candles are extinguished on the Altar as St John's Passion account is read. The service ends in darkness, symbolizing Christ being placed in the tomb. Reflective music is played to help our devotions. This service lasts about 30 minutes.
Holy Saturday 4th April at 7pm – Easter Vigil and First Mass of Easter
We begin in the evening, as we light the new Paschal Candle that symbolizes the light of Christ from the Easter fire, and the service begins by candlelight. A great celebration follows as we celebrate the risen Jesus, and the new Paschal Candle is installed. We renew our baptism vows, and then celebrate the First Mass of Easter, concluding with the Blessing of the Easter Garden.
Easter Sunday 5th April – Festival Mass at 1000am
We continue to celebrate the risen Christ in this festival Mass, followed by refreshments in the Fellowship Hall
